Tracing carbon flow through a sugar maple forest and its soil components: role of invasive earthworms

چکیده
We conducted a suite of tracer studies using the stable isotope 13C to follow and quantify flow carbon from leaf litter roots into soil components including aggregates biota with without invasive earthworms. Ten-year-old saplings sugar maple growing in understory thinned northern hardwood forest were labeled 13CO2. The was applied plots earthworms (Lumbricidae) traced for three years. also label trees through labeling chambers. Labeled fine stem wood incubated quantified over six years decomposition. able detect 10 cm depth 20 present, promoted C incorporation aggregates. food web much more enriched than aboveground plant litter.. Rapid root decay observed (k = 0.9 yr−1), although labelled almost completely decayed, little recovered (0.33%). approach successful quantifying transport fate tree soils could be enhanced careful quantification gross assimilation.

Fluid Flow through Carbon Nanotube Forest Microchannels
Due to their mechanical robustness, electrical conductivity, and porosity, vertically aligned carbon nanotubes (CNTs) are an intriguing material for microfluidics. Recently, Chen and colleagues showed that functionalized CNT features can efficiently capture and filter particles in microfluidic flows; and permeability was characterized using CNT-blocked channels. Here, we present flow characteri...
متن کاملA Survey of Sugar Maple Nutrition in Vermont and its Implications for the Fertilization of Sugar Maple Stands
Can fertilization of sugar maple stands lead to increased diameter growth, better crown conditions, and/or added sugar production? We have wrestled questions like these for over a decade at research sites in northwest Vermont. Recently we have begun to expand our understanding of maple nutrition by examining stands in a wider geographic area. The effectiveness of fertilization depends in large ...
متن کاملHydraulic analysis of water flow through leaves of sugar maple and red oak.
Leaves constitute a substantial fraction of the total resistance to water flow through plants. A key question is how hydraulic resistance within the leaf is distributed among petiole, major veins, minor veins, and the pathways downstream of the veins. We partitioned the leaf hydraulic resistance (R(leaf)) for sugar maple (Acer saccharum) and red oak (Quercus rubra) by measuring the resistance t...
متن کاملEarthworms and Soil Pollutants
Although the toxicity of metal contaminated soils has been assessed with various bioassays, more information is needed about the biochemical responses, which may help to elucidate the mechanisms involved in metal toxicity. We previously reported that the earthworm, Eisenia fetida, accumulates cadmium in its seminal vesicles. The bio-accumulative ability of earthworms is well known, and thus the...
